Friday Favorites: Weekend Edition

It’s been almost a month since I’ve posted and it’s gross because I have so many purchases to share and review and get all emotional about. Gross. I’m not going to shame myself any further so….

Birthday Style

IMG_0674

My Birthday was last Tuesday and I had a champagne “tea party” planned during the day so I didn’t have to turn up entirely. The TopShop skirt I’ve had sitting in my closet since last summer was the perfect accompaniment to my relaxed V neck and fresh out the box Louboutins. Easy yet polished. The pleats are everything.

Favorite Purchase

Christian Louboutin Iriza D’Orsay Pumps

IMG_0750

Duh. See above. Full details are being assembled right now so I won’t get all sweaty over it but I found these absolute gems after over 6 months of being met with continuous dismay – they were sold out all over the damn globe. I chose the Iriza because of the cut and major toe cleave, the white for the edgier take on a classic, and the pump because it’s pretty much the most essential shoe you can ever own. Plus, you could be wearing cropped sweats and a baseball cap with a pair of pumps and you’ll end up looking dignified as shit.

Favorite Beauty Product

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

3326af3a4418d6f3ee05413010c6977b

How have I not been using this forever? I should be put away. Because it’s been warmer, I’ve been noticing that my shadow was fading a lot quicker than usual (I use it on both my lids and lash line) and having your pricey shadow fade halfway throughout the day is pretty emotionally taxing. A light shone down on my sister as she oh so nonchalantly asked why I don’t use primer – this one to be exact. Speechless, for one of the first times. Fast forward – I’m using it and simply refuse to wear shadow on my lids without it. The color is more vibrant, it stays where I applied it, and it doesn’t make me look like a hot sweaty mess. Must have arsenal.

Favorite Meal

Buddy V’s Ristorante

IMG_0151

IMG_0483

I indulged in Buddy V’s Ristorante fare when I was in Vegas. And it did not disappoint. Probably the most amazing flatbread I’ve ever had. Worth every gram of carb. I had initially asked for the most delicious looking sandwich (without the chicken because I’m vegetarian) and after the server murdered me with her eyes and flat out refused to do that to me (and the sandwich) she suggested this delectable item that would be more appropriate. I usually don’t give two tinkling turtle doves about someone else’s opinion but I went for it. She looked like she was part of the WWE federation and I wouldn’t be able to complete my #ootd’s without my legs so I obliged. So pleased I did. Perfect parts of every ingredient. And it was my first time trying a Cannoli (ha ha) and it was akin to the feeling you get after an epic Sephora purchase (but in my mouth). By the way, if you were my server and you’re reading this – everything I’ve described about you here is with the utmost respect.

Favorite Scent

Diptyque Eau Duelle

f0574ccfad88e6815e1eb22ab2e871a7

I’ve probably mentioned this fragrance before but I have to do it again because it’s one of the most unique scents my nose has ever sniffed. Musky, with Bourbon vanilla, rockrose, and ambrosian. I honestly can’t explain it but it’s the most sublime mixture of musky and fresh. I like the Eaux de Parfum (it comes as a Eaux de Toilette as well) Try it.

Favorite Look

Shabby Chic

Hands down the strategically shabby chic look is my most esteemed look. It’s easier to pull off when you have your face on otherwise it can end up as a straight up shabby look – but your hair doesn’t have to be in place either so it’s a huge break. Any more give and you’re asking for a little much. Layering can be effortless even in the Summer months and this monochromatic look is a perfect example if adding some dimension to your layering. Love everything about it.

Wear Me: Spring Shoe Game

Me saying that I have a thing for shoes is like a junkie saying they don’t mind snorting coke. Tis a blatant misrepresentation.

I feel that a good pair of shoes can instantly lend a hand to an otherwise simple outfit. And c’mon, when you’re fashioned in black, grey and white all the time, you need something to stand out. I chose shoes. I’ll wear a white tee to it’s last threads but pair it with 50 different styles of shoe. Instant revival.

When I’m watching my spending (I know – hilarious, but humour me here), I limit myself to a shoe purchase a month. I’m not talking Louboutin or Valentino, but a pair or two from Zara are what I like to call thrifty and right now, underhanded. Whatever.

Anyway, I have my eyes on these styles that are big for Spring. I’m one of those assholes that wears strappy sandals in the dead of winter so nothing is safe from my vice-like grasp. If you can get away with spending as little time as possible traipsing around outdoors then why not go HAM on an open toe? (I’m talking to you East Coast).

One of each please.

The Espadrille

The espadrille is timeless. It’s the perfect relaxed shoe to throw on with a springy dress, a pair of cutoffs or skinnies. It’s the close relative of the flat, one that resides in Southern California. I find that most are pretty comfortable too – so you don’t look like you’re enduring the highest form of torture while walking through the mall. The mall is a happy place, The two just don’t mesh well together.

The Gladiator

I feel that this style makes an appearance every year during the warmer months. You can’t go wrong. It’s feminine, trendy, and will do up the simplest of outfits. Rebecca Minkoff vamped it up last year with her runway versions and I don’t see why you can’t take that same vision to the streets…

The Flatform

Calling all former lovers of Baby Spice and asian women who are known to pair them with fanny packs and sun visors. I’m only kidding. Kind of. I owned a few pairs of these in the late 90’s for sure. Now long gone, along with my smiley face jewellery and Sailor Moon memorabilia, these b*tches have found their way back from the depths of your high school wardrobe. I’ve picked the ones that I wouldn’t mind wearing. I’ve purposely left out the 5 inch sandals made of scuba material. I really didn’t think I could stand mentally transporting myself back to Grade 10.

The Slide

The slide is probably one of the easiest shoes to slip on (duh) and pair with just about anything. Grasshopper legged girls are clasping their hands with glee while ones with half the height may be a little weary with this particular type of footwear. Either way – there’s a style that’ll be easy to work with. I’ve pulled a few designs that give off a nice range…these aren’t your typical slip on sports sandals.

The Nude

For me, “send me nudes” refers to shoes. If I could only pick one shade of shoe to wear it would be nude. It’s flattering, natural yet chic, and goes with absolutely everything. Nude is definitely my go to when black is feeling too vampy for me. Spring 2015 agrees….

The Mule

The mule came back this fall and is still on trend for the Spring/Summer months. If you don’t like teetering in a pointy toe then a mule is your match. They’re easier to walk in and versatile enough to take from day to night. It’s a nice transition shoe when you’re just getting familiar with a heel (what are you? 12?) Kidding, kidding.

Laces

One of my favourite styles. A lace up heel is a shoe and accessory all in one. I like pairing mine with basic wardrobe choices otherwise the whole ensemble ends up being a little too trendy and busy looking. Whether they’re in flat or heel form, these are perfect for accentuating a pair of skinnies, a flowy midi skirt or fluttery shorts ad skin tight leather leggings.

Detailed Flats

Flats can honestly never go out of style. There is always a requirement for a flat shoe. Ballet, menswear inspired, laced, or an intricate pointy toe. You can pair a flat with anything. Keep them clean – that’s my one pet peeve when it comes to flats. They shouldn’t be falling apart, scuffed up or flopping around your foot. A well worn, proper fit will always make you look polished whereas a sh*tty looking, banged up flat will always make you look like you robbed someone on skid row.

Waves

IMG_4999

I haven’t used my Sultra wand since this summer and I can’t seem to comprehend why I retired it for so long. I was getting a little tired of my hairstyle – I almost always curl it at the ends for fullness – so I decided to switch it up. So pleased. Beach waves never go out of style, especially when you don’t want to look too overdone. I already have a full of face of makeup so keeping the hair a little more casual is a nice balance. The wand looks intimidating at first but it’s become second nature to me. I usually wrap my hair around a couple times and then leave the ends so that I don’t end up looking like Curly Sue (Google her).

Sephora Collection Flatter Yourself Contouring Brush Set

IMG_5129

I ordered this brush set a couple weeks ago and was going to do a full review but haven’t had enough time to really get up close and personal. It was an exclusive and I’m a sucker for an exclusive – mainly because I get anxiety over the fact that there is a product out there that if not purchased, will be out of reach forever. These are the types of regrets I simply cannot live with. Anyway, the bristles are remarkably soft and high quality and the set of 3 is complimentary and nice for creating a basic contour (as well as buffing and blending liquid makeup). Not to mention, they come with blotting papers, a sleek little pouch and a contour guide. Overall, it contains a stippling brush, a buffing brush, and and angled blush brush. I’m getting used to using the stippling brush because I’ve never used one before, but the buffing and blush brushes I can work with like a freaking pro. Love.

Teavana

IMG_5271

I, along with most of the female population, have vowed to get back into my healthy eating habits for the new year. I’m not into resolutions but I figured now was as good a time as any to detox by body after I indulged the sh*t out of Christmas. I started feeling a little Chipmunk like after hoarding every treat placed in front of me. Ya feel me? So – in addition to upping my workouts and monitoring my food intake, I’ve started hitting up loose tea. In no way am I ridiculous enough to believe that this is a food replacement (refer to: Favorite Food) but I didn’t feel like tweaking the title.  I picked up a fancy little holiday set right before Christmas and am actually shocked at how much they satisfy my sweet tooth. The set embraces the scents and tastes of the holiday season, and you can’t beat pumpkin spice and peppermint in one setting. Specifically, it contains 4 holiday teas which consist of Pumpkin Spice Brûlée, White Chocolate Peppermint, Chococaramel Sea Salt, and Spiced Apple Cider. I haven’t tried them all but so far I love the white chocolate peppermint and chococaramel sea salt. Probably because they’re the most indulgent sounding. Pathetic.

I don’t believe that this set is still available but you can get a ton of similar ones here – www.teavana.com

Voraciously Reading

IMG_5270

I’ve been trying to catch up on all the books sitting in my iBookshelf. I download them like they’re going to vanish within seconds – big up to purchase anxiety, yet again. Although I love reading on my iPad, there are some books I feel are worth buying in physical form. Coffee table books and books having to do with style and fashion are a must have tangible good. They look pretty and class up the joint, plus you can mark off and go back to them without having to scroll through hundreds of pages. I’d been wanting to read Sophia Amoroso’s #girlboss for months now. I’ve been a loyal Nasty Gal investor (read – shopper) and am always open to a little inspiration and advice, especially from such a powerhouse. I’m halfway in and am marking off pages worthy of anecdotes that need to be drilled into my head. Her uhf*ckwithable attitude is infectious, I’ll make sure to do a book report review when I’m done. I also purchased The Glitter Plan, which is Pam Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor’s rise to infamy with Juicy Couture. Since Juicy is now fading into the outlet abyss and they’ve recently launched their new, more high endline – Pam & Gela, I was interested in reading their memoir. Yes Please is another can’t miss read. I am crushing hard on Amy Poehler. She is genuinely funny and offers up some really deep musings that you have to read a couple times to ensure she isn’t just f*cking with you. Idol status. Those are the 3 books I’ve started reading so far. I’ve also just purchased Serena by Ron Rash , Dead Stars by Bruce Wagner, and Paper Towns by John Green. There isn’t enough time in the day…

Here’s a list of book adaptations hitting the big screen this year (and as everyone knows – the book is always better than the movie).  21 Books to Read Before They Hit The Big Screen in 2015

Ripped Denim

IMG_5090

Excuse the shitty photo quality. I was just getting home from work and realized I didn’t take advantage of the cloudless day for a superior outfit pic. These black skinnies are from Zara (I believe I purchased them back in October). They’re not as skinny in the shin area, and I find that a lot of denim fails me in this area because I have smaller shins. Other than J Brand which fit like second skin, a lot of denim I’ve tried and even purchased falls short here. Anyway, the wash and the strategic shreds are great. I actually DIY expanded the knee rips (with my own two hands and all) so that they’re a little more edgy and not as clean looking. Paired them with a pair of Jeffrey Campbell lace up flats (mimicked off Aquazurra) and had a bit of Kurt Cobain meets Olivia Palermo.

Purchased: Louis Vuitton Alma BB

I can’t believe this actually happened. Actually – I can. I have little control when it comes to purchases and when it’s a purchase I’ve been lusting over non stop for over 2 weeks – you can bet your wardrobe it’s going to end up in my arms. Or in this case – hanging off my shoulder, sitting at my hip and dangling from my forearms.

Welcome Alma BB.

IMG_1507

I debated purchasing from the online boutique but decided that because it’s been a while since I’ve bought a luxury designer bag, I wanted the full experience. Because I live in Canada I ended up saving a couple hundred because of the exchange and this was the sole reason that I didn’t prance over to Neimans. I called a couple of stores in Vancouver to locate the bag and was a little displeased that the actual boutiques didn’t have any left in Dune (the shade I decided on). They ended up having it at the Louis Vuitton in Holt Renfrew (which many say is the counterpart of a Neimans or Barney’s but I wouldn’t place it on the same level). I placed it on hold the same day and decided that my somewhat sh*tty Saturday needed a proverbial margarita so what better time, right?

Has anyone seen that viral video of a beyond f*cking miffed Bath & Body Works hoarder who goes on a 20 minute detailed rant? I need to get like her but because I don’t want people to see me grow horns on video I’ll do it in writing instead. I honestly expected the staff at Holt Renfrew to be somewhat knowledgeable, competent and helpful, you know, like a Nordstrom associate? I was sadly foolish to expect so much. The staff was somewhat ignorant and after 15 minutes I finally had an associate look at me. Really? You’d think they’ve been told to assist a certain type of patron because that was the inkling that I had. I’d love to see a common peasant enter that store and watch the scene unfold. They’d probably be able to pull out a cigarette and cop a squat without getting even a smidgen of a glance. Unimpressed and underwhelmed.

Aside from the lack of help, once I managed to secure an associate I was horrified to have her pull out my bag from a drawer (although it was in the dust bag) and proceed to sell it to me after I noticed visible markings. I pointed them out and she claimed that that’s just the bag was and due to the light colour, it was prone to color transfer. Um no. A brand new bag should be in pristine condition. I don’t care if it’s white and covered in velcro. It should be spotless upon purchase. She then pulled out another bag in the same manner and I came across another dark mark on the fabric so I was obviously like – uh uh, this is a no no. Again, she tried to explain the discoloured marks away. Is it just me who thinks that a 2000 bag should be in perfect condition? Doubt it. So after I displayed my pretentious, asshole behaviour (as deserved as it was) I had her call a different store who ended up having it, despite the limited stock I was told about a week ago. I fled that dump. Bye Felicia. On the same level as Neimans? Nordstrom? Incorrect. Their service and hospitality is second to none.

Okay rant over. I need to talk about my bag. Ain’t nobody need to taint this purchase.

See?

IMG_1505

Sneaky little key holder…

IMG_1509

Roomy but still cute…

IMG_1513

I was hesitant at first because of the smaller size but after watching numerous YouTube videos I was floored that it’s able to hold so much. The size is definitely deceiving. It’s delicate and feminine yet holds all the essentials. I was sold.

I’ve always been a huge Olsen approved oversize bag hoarder but the mini bag top handle/cross body is huge right now and now I know why. It’s so versatile and satisfies my different bag personalities. Cross body, slung over the shoulder and dangling from the arm. I can’t give a ___ about function over fashion but I didn’t even need to choose with this bag. The only understandable pitfall is that the lighter shades are susceptible to color transfer but again, it’s not meant to be  treated like a Coach bag every day tote bag. If you’re going to drop bombs on ya moms at the LV store you probably have enough sense to take a little extra caution in ensuring you don’t mark up your bag. I know it’ll be hard, but it’s hard keeping everything 100. Deal with it.

The strap is the perfect size, it sits on my hip like it was made to be there. The Vernis gleams and there’s a subtle hint of shimmer too. Honestly, I’d like to think it’ll pair with absolutely everything in my wardrobe. Oh, one thing to mention is that it’s assembled in the US and boasts so on a discrete tag within the bag itself. I ain’t mad at that.

Overall, I am head over heels. So pleased with my Alma. I had it on over my pajamas this morning. Can’t wait to take it on it’s first outing.

If you need me I’ll be using my wiping cloth to soak up the drool.

Side Swept Hair

I’ve been shamelessly repeating the side swept do for the past week or so…and I’m not sorry. I love that it looks like you put a lot of time and effort into styling a ‘do but really all I do I curl the ends as usual, Farrah the bangs a little and sweep it all over one shoulder. MAC Soar Lip Pencil

Okay okay. I caved and succumbed to the Kylie lip trend. I hate how you know who I’m talking about without even having to provide a last name. Gross. Anyway, I like the look and although it’s one of her Instapics that sent beauty bloggers and makeup hoarders into a frenzy, it’s the 90’s lip that’s iconic. Cholas everywhere are mean mugging at anyone who says they weren’t the real OG’s but I ain’t scared – I give credit where credit is due and I’m giving credit to the 90’s. I did a little bit of research – (and by research I obviously mean scrolling hashtags) and came up with a nice color combo that’s being thrown around social media…MAC Soar liner and Brave satin lipstick. I have both on here and find that although the liner took some getting used to (I’ve barely ever worn it) the end result is pretty pleasing. It’s like my lips – but better. The line isn’t too harsh plus it lasted all freaking day. Try it.

Pumpkin Patching

Fall is my 2nd favourite time of year. Do you even have to ponder my 1st? I love impromptu photoshoots, the perfectly crisp sunshine, the smell of pumpkin and leaves in the air and – Halloween.  My favourite patch is Bellewood Acres in Bellingham WA. It’s less of a little patch and more of a all encompassing farm with apples, pumpkins, whimsical decor, and amazing food. My sister and I went back a week later for the fries and gin apple cider. We don’t eat fries. We had these twice. The bomb. Oh right – the picture – self taken whilst prancing amongst the pumpkins. The outfit was obviously coordinated and acclimated to a pumpkin patch. I’m wearing Marc Jacobs booties, Paradise Mine denim and Artizia’s Montpellier sweater. Fall approved.

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne

I was in Nordstrom picking up the latest Diptyque candle (more on that later) and happened to find myself browsing the Jo Malone counter. It’s like clockwork I tell you. This is one of the newest introductions. Wood Sage & Sea Salt. Wow. Floored. Really nice and subtle, but unique and noticeable – pretty much standard for Jo Malone. A little rugged, a little seaside and a little woodsy. Truly amazing combination – I only picked up a couple samples but this is definitely on my list of scents I can’t be without.

Madewell Daywalk Plaid Shirtdress

I know flannels are one of the first items that get pulled out of storage when Fall hits and because I have a nice solid collection of shades and styles of button downs I really wanted to delve into different pieces this year. I eyed this on a couple occasions and finally made the purchase a couple weeks ago after trying it on. I’m one of those people that hate trying clothing on in – store. I’d much rather take it home and try it on in the comfort of my own home, own appropriately lit mirrors and lack of 10 pairs of eyes judging staring at me (Artizia I love you but you need to recognize). Anyway, loved it. I was conveniently wearing a pair of matching booties so I was able to bring my visions to life. I purchased it in red buffalo although the blue is a more unique shade…It looked a little shapeless on the hanger but I love the fit. I’m into the oversized look (all day everyday) and find that although it doesn’t hug the curves, it’s not dumpy looking. Can’t wait to wear it.

Louis Vuitton Alma BB Bag

Let me say this – I have been lusting over this bag for a mere 2 weeks or so. I was originally drooling on my screen while perusing the YSL Medium Tassel satchel but have since decided that it’s not the classic bag I’m looking for right now…I then moved onto the Louis online site and lusted after the Vernis collection. I love the monogram but feel that, again – it’s not as classic and easy to wear with everything. Contrary to the all black everything uniform – I do shy away from time to time and although it’s easy to pair a trendy bag with a neutral color palette, it’s hard to pair it with more detailed and trendier wardrobe choices. Enter the Alma BB in dune. I need you in my life. You are everything. You are classic, timeless, and hold my most prized tote-able items. True lust. ** Update – I have something to show you. I repeat – I. Have. Something. To. Show. You.
